Who we are

Shifrah UK was created to foster an environment where every Jewish birth worker, birthing woman and family feels safe and secure. We take our name from Shifrah and Puah, the courageous Hebrew midwives named in the Exodus story.

About us

  • We began as an informal group of Jewish birth workers and academics, coming together in the midst of rising antisemitism in healthcare and birth spaces. Over time we realised there was a need to support the wider community of Jewish birth workers and families, and to advocate for Jewish cultural safety in maternity services. Shifrah UK was born.

  • Shifrah UK celebrates and informs on Jewish cultural birth practices, and provides information, education and training in maternity and birth contexts.

We provide a collective voice that advocates for our community, helps to build understanding of our heritage and culture, and combats antisemitism.

  • Shifrah UK is open to anyone who is Jewish, has Jewish heritage, or is an ally to the Jewish community. We provide advocacy and support to Jewish birth workers and families, and educational resources to clinicians and employers.

We welcome and celebrate intersecting identities within and beyond the Jewish community. All are welcome to join our events, training or learn from our resources. We are anti-racist and seek cooperation and collaboration with other minoritised communities.
